New Directive Gives Fathers 10 Days Paid Leave, 5 Day Carer Leave Introduced

Quality and Equality

It has been a good day for workers rights with Parliamentary Secretary for Social Dialogue Andy Ellul announcing a bundle of measures aimed at increasing the quality of life and bolstering equality between couples. Fathers and carers are the focal point of these measures.

Mummy and Daddy

Ellul put the EU directive on Work-Life Balance forward this morning making it come into force on the 2nd of August 2022. By which fathers will be entitled to 10 days of paid leave, equalling a similar measure previously introduced for mothers.

Furthermore, parental leave has been elaborated on meaning a mother and father, including foster parents, are individually entitled to 4 months of leave, two of which will be paid.

New Leave

A novel Carer Leave will also be introduced granting workers 5 days a year to take care of someone in their same household with medical issues. They may be related or not. This is totally separate to ‘sick leave’ which will remain untouched.

What do you think of these new measures?
