Another Inmate Attempts Suicide In Prison

A 29-year old Maltese inmate was rushed to hospital yesterday evening after trying to commit suicide in his cell at the Corradino Correctional Facility (CCF).

He was certified to be in a critical condition upon arrival at Mater Dei Hospital. Medical staff were informed of the incident at 5.05 pm on 8th August and the man was certified to be in a critical condition upon arrival at Mater Dei Hospital.

In a statement released some hours after the news broke, the Home Affairs Ministry announced that it will be setting up an inquiry board to evaluate internal procedures at the correctional facility. The board will be chaired by psychiatrist Anton Grech, while the other two members will be Janice Formosa Pace and George Grech.

Formosa Pace recently resigned from the Governance Board of CCF to form part of the panel. Nationalist MP Beppe Fenech Adami has commented on the perceived conflict of interest of having Formosa Pace be part of an inquiry into her former place of work.

12 prisoners have died while serving time at Corradino Correctional Facility over the past three years. The last attempted suicide case was last month, a female inmate who tried to commit suicide in her cell and passed away in hospital a few days later.
