A Sicilian man caught with 118g of cannabis and eight partially smoked joints inside his vehicle has been spared a prison sentence after a local court decided that the drugs found were for personal use. “In the absence of any other evidence, the single circumstance of the amount of drugs found, in this case, does not convince the Court that those drugs were not exclusively for defendant’s personal use,” Magistrate Doreen Clarke said. The cannabis was found in a
single bag and no other paraphernalia associated with the trafficking cannabis were found. The decision is being considered a landmark ruling, representing a significant shift in the courts attitude towards marijuana use in Malta.
