MSPCA Pushes For An End To Karozzini On Maltese Streets

The Malta Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (MSPCA) is pushing for a proposal which would see the age-old trade of horse-drawn carriages, otherwise known as ‘Karozzini’, come to an end.

MSPCA is proposing that the government introduces a financial measure providing cabby drivers with a “golden handshake” to relinquish their licence and start a new trade or business.

‘We are concerned about what the future looks like for these horses if cabby drivers don’t have enough work to maintain them’ MSPCA said, citing how cabby drivers are struggling to earn enough income to properly support all horses due to the absence of tourism on the island during the pandemic.

The society also proposed that the horses should not be killed, but rather Animal Welfare should set up a state-funded sanctuary for horses.
