Belgium Has Elected The Worlds First Transgender Minister
Updated: Nov 16, 2020
Petra De Sutter has been appointed the world's first ever openly transgender cabinet minister.
She was chosen as Belgium’s new deputy leader making her the most senior openly transgender MP in Europe.
The 57-year-old is a gynaecologist and fertility expert at the University of Ghent and is known for her strong views around sexual health and trans issues.
LGBTQ organisations in Belgium have hailed De Sutter's appointment as a "milestone", because her role in the new government has not caused a media frenzy in the country.
